Strangles in horses
Strangles is a notifiable diseases in NSW. Submission of appropriate specimens accompanied by a Specimen Submission Form requesting exclusion of strangles is suitable notification. There are no laboratory fees for tests taken to exclude strangles.
Diagnosis
Clinical findings, isolation of Streptococcus equi from lesions.
Specimens required
- Pus samples or swabs taken from lesions and upper respiratory tract, submitted chilled in Amies charcoal transport medium for bacteriology.
