European foulbrood and its control

Summary

European foulbrood (EFB) is caused by the bacteriumMelissococcus pluton, and has become one of the most serious bee diseases in NSW in terms of reduced productivity of affected hives. The condition was identified in Australia in 1977 in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales; 1980 in Queensland; 1984 in Tasmania. EFB has not been found in Western Australia.

EFB can cause extensive losses in both amateur and commercial apiaries.
