Women's Gathering at Bega
A weekend of inspiring speakers, entertainment and networking is being planned for the 13th annual Women’s Gathering to be held in Bega on the October long weekend.
More than 350 women of wide ranging ages and backgrounds from around the State are expected to attend the gathering, which this year celebrates the theme “Be all that we can be”.
Co-ordinator of the Department of Primary Industries’ Rural Women’s Network Sonia Muir said the local committee had arranged a diverse line up of guest speakers, workshops, tours of the south coast region and activities.
“Some highlights of this year’s gathering include presentations from well known author and media personality Jacki French and former Miss Australia Belinda Green, who will both share life experiences and achievements,” she said.
“Other special womens’ stories include Carole Broadhead, who has travelled to remote China to meet the group of women whose culture and livelihood are nurtured by the Bega Loomgrowers support group; while Yasna Gilligan will share her remarkable story of arriving in Australia 15 years ago as a Bosnian refugee.
“In addition to some inspiring guest speakers, there will be a choice of 50 workshops, entertainment by Machitun and Deidre’s Tappers, great local food, and plenty of time to network.”
Family members will also be well catered for during the weekend, with an extensive Partners Program of tours and workshops for men and a children’s program.
Another feature will be the opportunity for women to access health and other government agency personnel, as well as a market featuring locally produced goods, static displays and an art exhibition.
People interested in attending should both register and arrange accommodation as soon as possible by contacting Wilma Chinnock, 6493 8310 or wilmachinnock@yahoo.com.au, or Dawn Hollins, 6492 3005.
The gathering will start on Friday evening, September 30 with a “Taste of the Bega Valley” meal at the Bega Town Hall and will conclude Sunday morning with keynote speakers, workshops and tours.
Minister for Natural Resources, Primary Industries and Mineral Resources Ian Macdonald will officially open the gathering. Registrations and payments must be received by September 16; early bird discounts apply to registrations before August 31.
