Modesty should not prevent a win
From the June 2008 edition of Agriculture Today.
Farmer and Young Farmer of the Year judges are doing their best to negotiate their way around the modesty of talented farmers in their 2008 hunt for this year’s winners.
Awards spokeswoman, NSW Department of Primary Industries’ Renata Brooks, says in 2008 judges are accepting nominations of meritorious farmers from their friends and colleagues.
"It’s often hard to get farmers to actually recognise their talents and achievements, which is why we are also accepting nominations from their peers," she said.
Prizes of $10,000 and $5000 for this year’s awards will go to farmers who demonstrate the right mix of sustainable and profitable farming management skills.
Applicants have until June 9 to submit entries for this year’s awards.
"So if you know an outstanding farmer that you think deserves this recognition, submit an application on their behalf," Ms Brooks said.
In addition to cash prizes, finalists also win the opportunity to act as ambassadors for their primary industry, to help boost awareness of the value and contribution of the rural sector.
A beef cattle field day at the property of current NSW Farmer of the Year winner Rob Sinnamon, "Yulgilbar", Baryulgil, this month drew 300 people.
The event showcased current beef cattle research trials, updated on-farm biosecurity and cattle tick management.
It also highlighted Mr Sinnamon’s farming achievements.
