Boost to beef business

From the March 2007 edition of Agriculture Today.

NSW beef producers are being offered the opportunity to participate in an innovative project aimed at boosting their profitability by at least five per cent in just two years.

Sponsored by the Co-operative Research Centre for Beef Genetic Technologies (Beef CRC), the project will see producers and scientists working side-by-side to hasten the adoption of research outcomes.

Project leader and director of the NSW DPI Beef Industry Centre of Excellence, Peter Parnell said the Beef Profit Partnerships project was designed to bridge the gap between researchers and producers.

Beef profit partnership teams comprise Beef CRC scientists, DPI beef extension staff and producers – their task being to set realistic goals and objectives to improve profitability, and to measure progress over time.

Initially, 12 beef profit partnership teams are being established in NSW – each facilitated by an experienced NSW DPI beef extension officer – with several already operating.

NSW DPI’s Profarm “Beef-N-Omics” program is being used to establish initial enterprise performance benchmarks and explore options for reducing production costs or improving turnoff value.

Participants will then commit to establishing an action plan, based on identified best bet options, to achieve measurable improvements in profitability of at least five per cent over the next two years.

Opportunities exist for additional producers to join the Beef Profit Partnerships program. Further information can be obtained from Steve Exton, NSW DPI Beef Industry Development leader on 6938 1950.
