Royal Show success a credit to DPI staff

From the May 2008 edition of Agriculture Today.

The DPI’s support for the Royal Easter Show moved to a record level this year, with sponsorship of the Sydney Horse Classic, taking the department into the Grand Champion sponsor category for the first time.

The horse classic was a highlight of the show as part of the State Government’s Road to Recovery horse events program in the wake of the successful eradication of equine influenza in NSW.

I want to acknowledge the efforts of all DPI staff who took part in the show, through activities such as the co-ordination and manning of the DPI, Landlearn and Tocal College displays, EI compliance for horse competitors, livestock and horticulture stewarding and judging, management of paperwork for interstate cattle, sheep and goats, and corporate events.

The successful involvement of the DPI in this year’s show was a credit to staff commitment to helping educate city families and reward outstanding agricultural producers, and to the excellent rapport that exists between the department and the Royal Agricultural Society.

Farmer of the Year

Another initiative that involves the DPI working with the Royal Agricultural Society is the annual Farmer and Young Farmer of the Year awards.

First prize of $10,000 is again offered for a NSW farmer that demonstrates the right mix of sustainable and profitable farming management skills.

I recently declared the awards open for 2008 applicants, together with NSW Farmers Association President Jock Laurie, and look forward to hearing about our next group of outstanding farmers.

These awards place particular focus on farm profitability and environmental sustainability, and the judges will again be looking for examples of innovative ways of coping with environment challenges, such as the ongoing drought.

These awards play an important part in recognising the sustainable farming practices our farmers are using today - and how innovation is helping them stay profitable during tough times.

We are looking for farmers who can share their approaches with their industry peers, and act as ambassadors to the broader community.

The annual awards are co-ordinated by the NSW Department of Primary Industries and NSW Farmers’ Association, and supported by Rural Press and the Royal Agricultural Society.
