Indigenous training at Warren
From the September 2006 edition of Agriculture Today.
Specialist trainers and mentors at Yanco are joining local experts from the Indigenous community at Warren to deliver training in agriculture, horticulture, business services and conservation and land management.
They address Indigenous clients requests to design and customise training programs, often 12 months in advance of training.
Three Indigenous participants recently completed a traineeship in Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management, while others gained numerous statements of attainment in conservation and nursery skills.
At least one participant became involved in the local Catchment Management Authority Indigenous reference group.
Staff are from NSW Department of Primary Industries Aboriginal Rural Training Program (ARTP).
Training occurs on participants' properties and communities, and at Murrumbidgee Rural Studies Centre at Yanco, where participants often stay for short residential programs.
Funds came from the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET) and the Indigenous Small Business Fund.
The Warren Community Development Employment Program facilitated training and mentoring.
Training has been delivered to various Indigenous communities in NSW, bordered by Brewarrina in the north, Moama to the south and Broken Hill in the west.
DPI offers qualifications such as Certificate II or III in Horticulture or Agriculture to Certificate IV and Diploma in Business (Governance). Training can be in traineeship or short course format.
