Chefs serve up support for local fishermen
A new campaign has been launched that will highlight the unique contribution made by the men and women in the commercial fishing industry to their local communities, regional jobs, culture and cuisine.
The campaign, worth more than $1.1 million, was launched at Sydney Fish Market’s Main Wharf on Friday (29 August) with four chefs teaming up with NSW fishermen to cook up delicious dishes using fresh Aussie seafood.
Coming ashore to front the campaign were fishermen Shane Castle (Ballina), Geoff Blackburn (Coffs Harbour), Paul Bagnato (Sydney) and John Jarvis (Eden). Time away from their boats was a costly exercise but just one indication of their commitment to presenting their industry.
Throwing their support behind the men - and joining the fishermen in preparing their catch - were chefs Justin North of Becasse, Armando Percuoco of Buon Ricordo, Sean Connolly of Astral and Peter Evans of Hugo’s Lounge.
The Australian seafood industry injects more than $2.2 billion into the national economy and underpins many thousands of jobs. It supports small businesses and contributes to regional tourism across the country.
It is important that the contribution of those in the commercial fishing sector is recognised and consumers are reminded of the benefits of high-quality fresh Australian seafood.
The campaign aims to strongly position Australian seafood in the marketplace and increase value to the benefit of the entire supply chain - most notable the fishermen and their communities.
The campaign will give fishermen a voice through media interviews, main stream advertising, public events and educational materials.
Just some of the issues of which the fishermen will speak with passion - and authority - include sustainable fishing practices, the value of fishing to the local economy, the affordability and flavour of lesser known fish species and the unique benefits of fresh, local wild caught seafood.
The campaign, a partnership between Sydney Fish Market, the Federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, NSW Department of Primary Industry and Seafood Experience Australia, hopes to encourage a fresh appreciation of the local seafood.
