An Angus cattle producer from Bowna near Albury in southern NSW has been named winner of the 2007 Helen Newton Turner Medal.

Chairman of the Helen Newton Trust, Barry Buffier, said Lucinda Corrigan’s wide ranging efforts in animal breeding and genetics made her a worthy medal recipient.

"Mrs Corrigan has made a remarkable contribution to the Australian beef industry through a range of both on-farm and research body roles," he said.

"She was Secretary of Performance Plus Breeders, an alliance of seedstock producers (original bloodline stock) and treasurer for the Beef Improvement Association 2000-2004.

"In 1999, Mrs Corrigan became involved with various Beef CRCs, where she contributed to reviews of net feed efficiency projects, was Chairman of the Advisory Committee, and since 2002, has been a member of the board of the CRC for Beef Cattle Technology.

"She has also contributed extensively to Meat and Livestock Australia, including as a member of the National Steering Committee which developed the Business Skills and Best Practice program, later named Edge Network.

"A graduate of the Australian Rural Leadership Program, Mrs Corrigan is a passionate and committed advocate of the future of agriculture, and is a current deputy chair of the CRC for Future Farm Industries.

"Together with husband Bryan, she remains an active and critical partner to many beef cattle scientists in their research projects, and regularly contributes to national and international conferences.

"Mrs Corrigan is well regarded throughout the beef cattle industry and genetics research sector for her constructive views, and ability to embrace new technology and ideas."

The 2007 Helen Newton Turner Medal will be presented to Mrs Corrigan at a special presentation during the AAABG Conference in Armidale on 26 September 2007, at which time she will also give an oration titled "Creating Value through Genetic Improvement, Some Reflections".

The Medal is awarded to provide encouragement and inspiration for scientists, technicians and practitioners engaged in the genetic improvement of productivity and product quality of livestock.

It was named after Dr Helen Newton Turner, whose career was dedicated to research into the genetic improvement of sheep for wool production.
