Tathra oysters win President’s Medal at 2006 Royal Easter Show
Tathra Oysters win the inaugural President’s Medal at Royal Easter Show.
NSW based Tathra Oysters has just won the inaugural President’s Medal at this year’s Royal Easter Show in Sydney.
The President’s Medal is a new award jointly sponsored by NSW Department of Primary Industries and Woolworth’s, which assesses the wine, dairy and fine foods not just on overall quality but also on the “triple bottom line” of production - economic, social and environmental factors.
People want to know that products are produced in an environmentally sustainable way and that they deliver benefits for the broader community.
The President’s Medal reflects the best of the best – with eligibility limited to just six products from the Royal Agricultural Society’s wine, dairy and fine foods categories.
Each product was evaluated on a range of facets, including overall quality plus their social, environmental and financial performance.
Tathra Oysters, the winning company, delivered high marks on all of these fronts and on 10 April 2006 took home this prestigious new honour during an official ceremony from the Royal Easter Show.
Based at Nelson Lake in the Mimosa Rocks National Park, Tathra Oysters prides itself on creating a viable business that is also environmentally friendly.
It is a family owned and operated business that uses technology, direct customer feedback and a hands-on approach to produce great-tasting oysters.
The company engineers much of its own oyster growing components and uses tar-free, chemical-free, long-life materials.
Shell waste is used to help stabilise local road surfaces, thereby minimising the need for grading. It also uses high-pressure spray nozzles to keep water use to a minimum, and filters and recycles water onto adjacent parklands.
The business provides full-time employment for four people as well as seasonal casual jobs. The company attracts tourist dollars to the region by promoting its business and shop-front, where customers can taste Tathra oysters. It also sponsors local sporting organisations and supports local charities.
