Fishing fees fund new fish cleaning tables

Two fish cleaning tables will be built at two of the most popular fishing spots in the Georges River area after Kogarah Municipal Council successfully applied for a Recreational Fishing Trust grant of nearly $5000 from the NSW State Government.
Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Recreational Fisheries Manager, John Diplock said the fish cleaning tables would be located at the Sans Souci Fishing Pontoon and at Tom Uglys Point.
“Kogarah Municipal Council applied for funding from the Trust following extensive consultation with local anglers for fish cleaning facilities. The Council will contribute half the cost of the $9,900 project,” Mr Diplock said.
“Currently there is only one fish cleaning table in the whole Georges River located at Bonnet Bay, which is well used by anglers.
“The new fish cleaning table at Sans Souci will complement the current pontoon upgrade. The other table will be located on the northern side of Tom Uglys Bridge.
“The new tables will provide a high standard facility for recreational anglers to gather together and clean fish in a well lit and maintained area.
“The new tables will provide a clean, convenient and efficient facility for local anglers and recreational boaters to use. There will be tables and signage at both locations to promote responsible and sustainable fishing.
“The tables will be built by Council, with all work closely supervised by qualified staff,” he said.
Council expects work to be completed in time for the start of the summer fishing season.
Mr Diplock said anyone could apply to the Recreational Fishing Trusts for funding including fishing clubs and organisations, councils, community groups, individuals and so forth.
“All money raised by the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee is placed into the Recreational Fishing Trusts and spent on improving recreational fishing in NSW.
“These trusts are regulated by law and overseen by two committees made up of recreational fishers - one for saltwater and one for freshwater,” he said.
