Fish Friendly Farms information session for Tarcutta

NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and Tarcutta Valley Landcare are holding a Fish Friendly Farms information session in Tarcutta at the Returned and Services League (RSL) Club on Wednesday 21 February from 7 pm till 8 pm.

“This is an opportunity for landholders and others to come along and find out how to make their properties more fish friendly,“ said organiser Charlotte Grove from NSW DPI.

“Those attending will also hear about new funding opportunities to help fix up fish habitat in Tarcutta Creek.”

Fish Friendly Farms is a new and innovative NSW DPI program that involves educational field days, workshops and publications on fish friendly land management, fish habitats, fish species and funding opportunities for landholders.

It is supported by the NSW Council of Freshwater Anglers and funded by the Murray Darling Basin Commission’s Native Fish Strategy and a Natural Resources Advisory Council Forging Partnerships grant.

Ms Grove said there were many ways landholders could help make their farms more fish friendly.

“They can protect and rehabilitate degraded riverbanks with vegetation native to the area, ensure road crossings and other structures don’t block the movement of fish, ensure that large woody habitat (snags) in the river lie undisturbed and control significant sources of sediment input to the river, such as eroding gullies” she said.

She said having a fish friendly farm not only benefits fish.

“Many farmers are now enjoying improved productivity after taking a few simple steps.

“Reduced stock loss from bogging and drowning can be achieved by installing off-stream watering points and riparian fencing.

“Stock and crops are protected from wind and heat stress through planting healthy riparian zones and establishing natural wind buffers.”
