NSW DPI appoints new fisheries officer for Albury

NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has appointed a new District Fisheries Officer, David Potter, who will be based at Albury.

NSW DPI Supervising Fisheries Officer Peter Tilbrook said Mr Potter’s appointment would be a welcome addition to the district fisheries’ staff patrolling the Murray River from Tocumwal up to its source around the Tom Groggin area, and including major dams such as Lake Mulwala and Khancoban pondage, and parts of the Billabong Creek.

Mr Potter has extensive experience in NSW inland and coastal fisheries and has previously been located at Dareton, Broken Hill and Sydney.

Mr Tilbrook said fisheries officers played an important part in helping our fisheries resources remain sustainable.

“They advise recreational and commercial fishers and the general community of fishing rules and restrictions, and patrol NSW waters to ensure everyone is abiding by the NSW fishing laws.

“They also work with fish farmers and assist with environmental, advisory and educational programs,” he said.

Mr Potter said he was keen to take up this new challenge and hoped to meet as many local fishers as possible.

“I grew up in Finley and have a good knowledge of the area,” he said.

Mr Potter has previously worked in the Albury area during periods of relief, while other NSW DPI staff have been on leave, and has assisted with fisheries’ operations within the district.

Mr Tilbrook said a second fisheries officer based at Albury would be appointed in the near future.
