Fishing is favourite activity for adults with special needs

A group of 10 young adults with special needs will have the opportunity to take part in the nation’s favourite pastime when they attend a fishing workshop to be held by NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI).

DPI’s Fisheries Community Relations Manager, George Mannah, said the group had developed a passion for fishing after having taken part in DPI workshops since 2001.

“Aged between 20 and 24 years, the group from Auburn regularly attend the workshops, which are funded by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust and run by DPI staff and Fishcare Volunteers.

“Participants are able to practise knot tying, casting, rigging and other fishing skills in a safe and supervised environment.

“They’re a wonderful and appreciative group of young people, it’s a rewarding experience for everyone who takes part in the day,” Mr Mannah said.

The fishing group is organised by Sibel Bas, the Coordinator Peer Support and Flexible Respite, Baptist Community Services in Auburn who said she was delighted to be involved with such a positive experience for the young adults.

“The fishing workshop is always a popular outing. The DPI officers and Fishcare Volunteers are terrific and always ensure that everyone has a really great day.

“It’s an opportunity for the participants to have fun outdoors, learn something useful and be part of a social event,” Ms Bas said.

The workshops are a wonderful example of fishing fees being used to improve community understanding and participation in recreational fishing in NSW.

Funds raised from the recreational fishing fee are placed into two trusts, one for saltwater and one for freshwater, and can only be spent on projects to improve recreational fishing.
