Learn to Fish workshop for kids at Eden

Keen young anglers and would-be anglers on the Far South Coast who want to fish over the Easter school holidays have a chance to learn some valuable skills at a Department of Primary Industries (DPI) fishing workshop.

NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Ian Macdonald said the workshop, funded by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust, will be run by experienced DPI fisheries staff, local club members and Fishcare volunteers, on Saturday April 14.

“It will give children aged between eight and 14 years the chance to practise casting, rigging, tying knots and fishing.

“They’ll also learn about ethical fishing practices, aquatic habitats and threatened species,” Mr Macdonald said.

DPI Education Officer Gavin McDonall said the workshops were always very popular and fill up fast.

“Some participants had been known to land a big one and be the envy of their family and friends.

“The workshops are run around the state as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to teach children about recreational fishing,” Mr McDonall

In the morning the youngsters will inspect some of the equipment used by DPI fisheries officers and learn the theory of fishing. In the afternoon they will put their new skills into action by fishing for bait fish, bream, snapper and tailor. They’ll also learn the importance of safe handling techniques for releasing fish back into the water.

“Each child will be provided fishing gear, including a rod, reel, hooks, swivels and lures, and a cap and shirt, to take home, and lunch is provided.”

Mr McDonall said the enjoyment and education messages of the day were not confined to the young fishers.

“Many of the guardians who attend the day with the youngsters, listen to the messages and tips and appreciate that the children are receiving comprehensive education on how and where to fish,” Mr McDonall said.
