Shawn's Creek demonstration reach open day

Landholders, locals, community groups and other interested parties are invited to attend an open day and see first hand important work in Shawn’s Creek to re-establish habitat for native fish and other aquatic life.

Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Conservation Officer, Shaun Morris, said the area is part of a 14 kilometre demonstration reach which covers most of Shawns Creek.

“In recent months more than 100 tonnes of native hardwood logs have been strategically placed into the Shawn's Creek, this will not only enhance fish habitat but also reduce the effects of erosion and runoff.

“As well as these engineered works exotic trees have been poisoned and over 800 native trees have been planted along the Shawn's Creek to improve riparian biodiversity and in stream structure,” Mr Morris said.

Over 2km of fence line has also been installed along the Creek to protect refuge pools, riparian zones and improve natural recruitment of native trees while also allowing access by native animals such as emus, kangaroos and wallabies.

These activities are part of a two year project which is co-ordinated by NSW DPI with funding from the Central West Catchment Management Authority.

Landholders have also made a significant contribution to this demonstration reach which is a great example of the importance of preserving the quality of aquatic (instream) and riparian (riverside) habitat in the Upper Castlereagh River Catchment.

In addition to these works local native fish and erosion and sediment reduction methods can also be viewed as part of the open day.

Those wishing to attend the open day or those wanting further information should contact NSW DPI Conservation Management Officer, Shaun Morris on 68811270. Please RSVP for the Open Day by 4th June 2007.
