Holiday fun at DPI fishing workshops

Aspiring and keen young anglers looking for a bit of excitement and fun this school holidays can learn more about recreational fishing at two NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) fishing workshops on Friday 16 January and Saturday 17 January.

The two workshops will be held at NSW DPI Narrandera Fisheries Centre, Buckingbong Road, off the Sturt Highway, from 10 am to 3 pm.

The fishing workshops program is funded through the Recreational Fishing Trust. All monies raised by the recreational fishing fee are placed in two Trusts (Saltwater and Freshwater) and these funds are used to improve recreational fishing.

The Trusts dedicate more than $50 000 a year to provide fishing workshops across NSW.

NSW DPI Fisheries Education Officer, Brett Smith, said the fishing workshops would give children aged between 8 and 14 years the chance to learn about recreational fishing rules and regulations, native and introduced fish species and aquatic habitats.

Mr Smith said fishing workshops were held around the State as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to teaching children about sustainable recreational fishing and habitat conservation and are a great way to introduce children to this fun and healthy outdoor sport.

"The Narrandera Fisheries Centre is the ideal place for children to learn more about freshwater fishing in a safe environment.

"The youngsters will get the chance to put their new skills into action fishing in a pond specially stocked to improve their chances of a good catch with freshwater species such as Murray cod, golden perch and silver perch," he said.

The cost is $40 a child, which includes a quality rod and reel, tackle box, shirt, hat and a bbq lunch.
