Recreational fishers are being praised for their efforts in obeying rules and regulations during a recent fisheries compliance operation on the Murray and Wakool Rivers in the State’s south west.
Industry & Investment (I&I) NSW Fisheries Compliance Director Glenn Tritton said fisheries officers from the South West and North West of NSW gathered for the compliance operation, targeting fishers on the opening weekend of the Murray cod season.
“I&I NSW Fisheries Officers targeted hundreds of recreational fishers dropping a line in on one of the busiest fishing weekends of the year, which also includes the Mulwala Fishing Classic which attracted more than 3000 competitors,” he said.
“Fisheries officers checked 973 fishers, with a total of 92 per cent, or 898 fishers complying with the legislation.
“This is a great result, and better than in previous years.
“Fishers were checked to ensure they held a valid NSW Recreational Fishing Fee Receipt, (commonly known as a fishing licence) and were complying with a range of restrictions including size and bag limits and were using legal fishing equipment.
“Over 20 people were issued penalty notices for failing to pay the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee, with 31 persons receiving a written caution for failing to have the fishing fee receipt in their possession. Penalty notices were also issued for bag and size limit offences.
“A number of fish plus fishing equipment were seized during the operation including small quantities of golden perch, silver perch, Murray cod, as well as yabby traps, shrimp traps and a cast net.
“Despite the actions of a few, I&I NSW fisheries officers are very pleased that many fishers continue to do the right thing for the benefit of the fisheries resource now, and for future generations.
“Illegal fishing in NSW is a serious crime, and I&I NSW fisheries officers will continue to target high risk illegal offenders.
“I&I NSW is committed to continuing the crackdown on illegal fishing, and bringing offenders before the courts to pay the price.”
