Christmas has come early for Jindabyne locals with the Gaden Trout Hatchery to open its doors for a Community Open Day on Sunday December 20, 2009, NSW Primary Industries Minister Steve Whan said today.

“The Gaden Hatchery is one of the hidden gems of Jindabyne,” Minsiter Whan said.

“Some locals have no idea just what we have right here in our own backyard, so the Open Day is a chance to share it.

“The Gaden Hatchery is famous for being one of Australia’s main breeding centres for cold water sport fish including Atlantic salmon, Brook trout, Brown trout and Rainbow trout but it is so much more than that.”

Mr Whan said the Gaden Hatchery is an ideal location for locals and tourists alike.

“We have over one hectare of parklands located right on the beautiful Thredbo River with picnic shelters and coin operated barbeques available.

“There are ponds where visitors can view feeding of the fish, and tours of the breeding ponds, aquariums and exhibits conducted by our experienced fisheries staff.

“The centre also features a 100 seat theatrette where visitors can view a short 10 minute video showcasing what goes on at the hatchery.”

The Community Open Day will be held from 11am – 3pm, the local Lions Club will be running a BBQ providing a sausage sizzle and soft drinks for sale.

Activities on the day include guided walks around the hatchery, fishing demonstrations, games and prizes for children provided by the Professional Fishing Instructors & Guides Association.

There will also be demonstrations provided by the Local SES, Ambulance service and local Fisheries officers.

The Gaden Hatchery is open between 10-4 every day of the year except Christmas Day.

Individual, school and group visitors are welcome and a small entry fee applies.
