Forests NSW is calling for temporary firefighters to work during the coming summer months in its Macquarie Region around Bathurst, Orange and Oberon.

Forests NSW regional fire manager, Russell Cowgill, said the organisation was looking for 20 temporary firefighters to assist in fire protection of the State’s highly valuable plantation and native forest assets in the region.

The temporary positions will be based at Canobolas, Sunny Corner, Pennsylvania, Mount David and Black Springs.

“We are looking for fit, energetic people, preferably with a rural or practical background,” Mr Cowgill said.

“When not actively fighting fires, these people will be employed on a wide range of activities including weed spraying, clearing fire trails and other maintenance jobs around the forests and plantations.”

He said this temporary employment was a very good introduction to Forests NSW and provided an excellent skills base for those seeking permanent employment in the forest industries.

Applicants must be prepared to work outdoors in a wide range of climatic conditions, plus they will need to be willing to work flexible hours, especially when a wildfire occurs.

All applicants must pass a medical examination, a physical assessment and a fitness walk prior to commencing duty.

The first few weeks of employment for the successful applicants are dedicated to training where required.

Forests NSW provides accredited training for firefighting, four-wheel driving, chainsaw operation, OH&S and first-aid as well as a number of other valuable rural/practical skills.

Applicants must have a current driver’s licence and provide their own accommodation.

Mr Cowgill said temporary employment was at times extended beyond the firefighting season as temporaries may be called upon to help Forests NSW with its extensive hazard reduction burning program in autumn.

Applications are open until close of business on Friday 22 September 2006.
