Forests NSW has just completed a training school for 10 of its fire tanker operators in the Tumut, Batlow and Tumbarumba areas.

The two-day tanker training school was developed in association with the Riverina Institute of TAFE to meet the relevant national rules for training - the Australian Quality Training Framework.

The course, held in Tumut State Forest, is a pilot for providing training across the State to ensure that Forests NSW tanker operators are suitably skilled to operate emergency response vehicles.

Forests NSW regional manager Bob Germanste said the course was presented by three of Forests NSW most experienced tanker operators.

“The presenters were able to impart a vast understanding of the different terrain encountered when fighting fire, from the western plains to the coastal forests, to the pine plantations that we have in this region,” he said.

The course included driver training, pump theory and pump operation - all integral in getting the tanker to the fire, and deploying the load of water effectively.

Mr Germantse said that such intensive training meant that region’s staff were well prepared for what promises to be a very long and challenging fire season.

“Being prepared for fire is vital. A big part of being prepared is knowing your equipment, and how to use it.

“The fire tanker is such an integral part of our operations in a fire that it is very important that we have numerous people who know how to operate it,” he said.

Forests NSW fire tankers can carry up to six people and 4000 litres of water. The course allowed participants to pump water up and downhill and refill tankers via a quick-fill pump.

A mapping exercise utilised areas close to town to give tanker operators some practice in using the mapping system and reporting fires.
