Following the recent emphasis on log truck safety by the Forest Industry Council (FIC) in the Tumut, Tumbarumba and Albury areas, a model wooden log truck has been donated for road safety demonstrations.
Forests NSW Truck Safety Project manager, Andrew Nicholls, was thrilled to receive the model truck donated by Trevor Hollands from the Tumut and District Woodworkers’ Club.
Mr Nicholls said Mr Hollands, as a former manager of Tumut and Gundagai post offices and OH&S representative, knew the benefits of promoting health and safety issues.
Mr Hollands said he understood how difficult it could be to put across an effective OH&S message.
“So when Andrew approached me about lending him the model truck I made for the Visy opening, I thought the safety of log trucks drivers and the rest of the community was worth a special effort - so I donated a log truck to the project,” he said.
Mr Nicholls said the model truck was now being taken around NSW to demonstrate to truck drivers a whole range of safety issues including types of loads (loose logs, light logs and long logs).
“It is thought provoking and gets driver’s talking about safety issues they encounter in their day-to-day lives.
“The model truck along with the recent safety forums have been a great way of promoting safety issues related to the timber industry,” Mr Nicholls said.
He said during the past month more than 220 people have attended safety truck forums at Tumut, Tumbarumba, Albury, Bombala, Eden, Port Macquarie and Grafton.
“These forums represent an important step by the timber industry towards improving safety in log truck operations.
“And obviously this initiative will benefit other road users as well,” Mr Nicholls said.
