Forests NSW is about to begin roadwork in the Nambucca State Forest for a timber harvesting operation planned to begin in February next year.
“The roadworks between Nambucca and Hyland Park are expected to be finished later in December, weather permitting,” Forests NSW North East Region harvest planning team leader Steve Pickering said.
“A detailed harvesting plan has been prepared and copies will be available for inspection at the Forests NSW office in West High Street Coffs Harbour and at the Nambucca Heads public library.
“Operations will be excluded from approximately 50 per cent of the harvest area to protect wetlands, old growth and other values.
“This harvesting operation will remove trees that have reached maturity.”
The removal of trees and associated ground disturbance in this type of forest promotes natural regrowth for future timber supplies and habitat conservation.
Mr Pickering said visual protection measures would apply along the edges of Railway Road, Palmer Street, Mahogany Road and Eggleton Street.
The public will be excluded for safety reasons from the harvesting area during the active harvesting period.
Mr Pickering said people who use the forest for recreation should obey exclusion signs and stay clear of machinery during the harvest, after which full public access will be restored.
