Please note - This news release has now been archived and may contain outdated information.
The public comment period for proposed amendments to the environmental provisions of the Mining Act 1992 closes this Friday, September 9.
All interested stakeholders are urged to make a submission before the closing date to make sure their views are heard.
A key focus of the proposed amendments is to preserve the principles of ecologically sustainable development in the Mining Act.
By strengthening environmental provisions within the Act, the State Government is helping to secure the future of mining in NSW.
These proposed changes are consistent with environmental management and enforcement provisions in other legislation across NSW and will apply to all mining including opal prospecting.
The Government will take all submissions into account in developing the final proposals to amend the Act.
The position paper on the proposed amendments to the Mining Act 1992 was released on 29 July. It can be found on the NSW Department of Primary Industries’ website at: www.dpi.nsw.gov.au
