The NSW Mine Safety Advisory Council has selected a consultant to address five major recommendations of the Wran Mine Safety Review.

The internationally recognised consultant Shaw Idea P/L was selected by the Council following an open tender process.

The successful consulting consortium comprises some of Australia’s foremost researchers who have unparalleled knowledge and experience in contemporary approaches to OHS management, fatigue and working hours.

The Project Steering Group established by the Council to oversee the consultancy will ensure the smooth implementation of the project.

A census of mines in NSW, including all sectors of the mining industry is now being conducted.

The five recommendations have been grouped into three project topics for the independent assessment of:

  • Production bonus payments and safety-based incentive schemes
  • Fatigue management and working hours in the mining industry
  • OHS management systems and consultation.

This project, which is expected to take six months to complete, will require significant interaction with all sectors of the industry throughout NSW.

It is vital that the industry fully participates and contributes to this project so that accurate, credible and representative information is gathered.

Research results will enable the Council to advise the NSW Government on ways to address issues raised by the Wran Mine Safety Review.
