A new $7 million coal industry injury treatment centre at Speers Point, will provide essential health and insurance services for the region’s growing mining sector.

The Coal Services P/L facility will provide health assessments and education, training services, physiotherapy, pain management, occupational rehabilitation services and workers compensation.

With two thirds of the State’s coal workers based in the Hunter, this facility is well placed to provide essential medical and insurance services to this valuable industry.

There is a medical team of six, as well as 12 allied health professionals, who provide a variety of rehabilitation and treatment services to more than 170 customers in the region and beyond.

Previously located at Warners Bay, the facility will provide vital accredited training services including WorkCover, first aid, drug and alcohol awareness and specialised training programs in injury prevention and risk management, which will help benefit workers every day.

It will also provide essential services for workers in coal related industries including Port Waratah Coal Services and EDI Rail.

Coal Services currently caters for the State’s entire coal industry from its Speers Point, Singleton, Lithgow and Corrimal health centres.

Last year it provided more than 25,500 medical procedures and environmental tests.

It’s estimated the new Speers Point facility this financial year will provide:

  • 4,500 medical services;
  • 500 rehabilitation and treatment referrals; and
  • 1,500 physio treatments.

Coal Services is jointly owned by the NSW Minerals Council and the CFMEU.

It was established in January 2001, merging the activities of the former Joint Coal Board and the Mines Rescue Board into one company.
