Director of the NSW Geological Survey Lindsay Gilligan, has been recognised with the Outstanding Contribution to Mining Award in the 5th Annual Australian Mining Prospect Awards.
The award is given to an individual from industry or government who has significantly influenced positive change in mining or minerals processing in Australia.
The Geological Survey is the State Government’s principal geoscience agency which provides information and advice to government, the exploration and mining industry and the community on the State's geology, mineral resources and land use planning.
Lindsay has dedicated much of his life to improving the minerals industry and has been duly recognized for his long-term dedication.
The Australian Mining Prospect Awards recognise excellence in mining and mine management through a variety of categories.
Lindsay was also honoured in the 2008 Queens Birthday Awards with a prestigious Public Service Medal earlier this year.
Deputy Director General of DPI Alan Coutts today congratulated Lindsay, saying the mining award was recognition not only of his wide ranging and distinguished career but of his outstanding service to geoscience, mineral resource assessment and enhancing mineral exploration in this State.
Lindsay is the 14th Chief Government Geologist and Director of the Geological Survey of New South Wales, a branch of the Department of Primary Industries and has made an exceptional contribution to the increased and intensified knowledge and understanding of the geology and mineral resource potential of NSW.
Lindsay leads a highly motivated team of well qualified geoscientists and related specialists based in Maitland.
The Geological Survey itself has a proud scientific heritage dating back to its establishment as part of the then Department of Mines in 1875.
NSW private mineral exploration figures for 2007-08 show a record total expenditure of $189.9 million, an increase of 32% over the previous year.
Lindsay has played an instrumental role in designing and managing Government mineral exploration initiatives to help unlock mineral resource potential in parts of NSW.
