Members of the public are encouraged to visit the Department of Primary Industries - Mineral Resources Maitland office next Tuesday October 14 when there will be an Open Day as part of the celebration of Earth Science Week.
"The Department will showcase its geoscience activities where the public can come and see a diverse range of minerals, rocks and fossils on display from the State’s mineral and palaeontological collections" said John Watkins, Acting Director Geological Survey.
Earth Science Week is an international event aimed at helping people develop an understanding of the importance and impacts of earth science to every day life.
"People can learn about clean coal technologies, the importance of minerals to our everyday lives and environmental management in exploration and mining," said Mr Watkins.
"Students can meet with geoscientists whose jobs it is to investigate our State’s mineral potential, see the tools and exciting new technologies employed to create maps and models of our mineral resources.
Historical maps and books from the 1800’s will also be on display in the Mineral Resource library.
This is a great opportunity for members of the public, students and local business to discover the workings of the Department.
For students there will be the chance to talk to geologists, geophysicists and research scientist about their jobs, learn what they do on a daily basis.
Career information will also be available.
The Open Day will take place between 1pm and 5pm at 516 High Street, Maitland.
