A ballot for an additional opal prospecting block adjacent to the Lightning Ridge township will be conducted next week on 20 November, Brad Mullard Executive Director, Mineral Resources, I&I NSW announced today.

“This area was previously identified for urban development, with prospecting and mining restricted.

“However the Walgett Shire Council has revised future planning needs, thereby releasing the block” he said.

The ballot for Opal Prospecting Block 116, which requires a non refundable registration fee of $25, will be held at 9:30am on Friday 20 November 2009 at the Lightning Ridge Mineral Resources Office.

The block is located between Fantasia St, 3 Mile Rd and the Lightning Ridge Airport.

The ballot is similar to a lottery with names drawn out of a hat to ensure everyone has the same chance.

Further information about the ballot is available at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/minerals/lightning-ridge or by contacting the Lightning Ridge NSW DPI office on 02 6829 9200.
