Kids learn how to hook a big one at fishing workshop

Keen young anglers and would-be anglers in the Jindabyne area can brush up on their fishing skills, or learn how to fish, at a special NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) fishing workshop to be held later this month.
The workshop, funded by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust and run by experienced fisheries staff, will give children aged between eight and 14 years the chance to practise casting, rigging, tying knots and fishing.
Fisheries Education Officer, Gavin McDonall, said it’s a great opportunity for parents to give their child the opportunity to learn how to fish before the school holidays. Youngsters will also learn about bag and size limits, aquatic habitats, threatened species and ethical fishing practices.
He said fishing workshops are held around the State as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to teaching children about recreational fishing and conservation.
The NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts provide funding for the workshop program, and dedicates more than $60,000 a year to ensure regional communities across the state can access the DPI facilities and promote the great sport of fishing to kids.
Mr McDonall said the Gaden Trout Hatchery is one of five government run hatcheries in NSW.
‘Gaden includes a hatching shed, visitors centre, grow out ponds and tanks, aquarium displays and much more for young visitors to enjoy and experience.
‘The keen fishers will be able to put their new skills into action by fishing for trout.
‘They will also be able to fish in a pond specially stocked to improve their chances of a good catch, something every keen angler hopes for,’ he said.
The cost is $40 a child which includes a rod, reel and tackle kit to take home plus a sausage sizzle lunch.
