David Gopurenko is a research scientist using DNA barcoding and molecular systematics to study agriculturally important insects and pests. He received his PHD in Australia and conducted Post-Doctoral studies in the USA. David joined NSW DPI in 2007.

I currently manage a broad variety of DNA barcoding projects at the Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute DNA barcoding facilities to identify species diversity of agriculturally important insect and pests of biosecurity concern. I am involved with ongoing collaborative research to identify and catalogue the species diversity of the Australasian biting midge fauna (Culicoides spp.), a genus containing many species that vector livestock affecting arboviruses. I also investigate associations between sap feeding insects (Hemiptera), the host plants they feed off and the pathogens they vector to the hosts; other projects study cryptic diversity of beneficial parasitoids, and other arthropods of ecological interest. I am also involved in several independent projects to examine species composition and population genetics of exotic weeds and grasses in Australia.
In all these projects, I collaborate with specialist taxonomists and ecologists and generally use an integrative taxonomic approach to delimit, identify and describe species using both molecular and traditional morphological analyses.
