Fishing has been an integral part of Aboriginal culture for thousands of years.

Aboriginal people have used coastal and inland waters to provide for themselves, for ceremonial purposes and for trade. The culture also requires them to be custodians of this resource.

The NSW Indigenous Fisheries Strategy aims to support greater involvement of Aboriginal peoples in the management of the State's fisheries resources, and encourage the involvement of Aboriginal communities in the emerging aquaculture industry.

The NSW Government has allocated $1.6 million to implementing the Strategy over its first two years.

Following community consultation, the Indigenous Fisheries Strategy and Implementation Plan have been prepared.
