Yabby marketing cooperative feasibility study
As the name suggests, this study examines the feasibility of establishing a yabby marketing cooperative, including set-up and running costs, current domestic and international markets and potential market share, marketing planning and strategies, marketing channels and risk/opportunity analysis and management.
It also contains a wealth of information on current yabby markets and potential for market development of the species.
Benefits of marketing cooperatives
Marketing cooperatives for aquaculture species have many potential advantages, including:
- Economies of scale from a shared processing, packing and marketing facility with a large volume;
- Combined throughput volume making access to export markets easier;
- More control over product than selling to a distributor or agent; and
- Increased marketing profit margin by eliminating the 'middle man'.
The yabby study
The Yabby Marketing Cooperative Feasibility Study, was prepared for and funded by NSW Fisheries and the NSW Department of State and Regional Development after an approach by a group of Hunter yabby farmers examining the possibility of such a cooperative.
The Hunter group was used as a case study for the project but the information would apply to any group looking to establish cooperative marketing ventures for yabbies in NSW.
The Yabby Marketing Cooperative Feasibility Study, completed by Ruello and Associates Pty Ltd, makes essential reading for anyone currently involved in, or looking to get into, yabby farming or marketing.
