Distribution: These fish inhabit west-flowing streams of NSW with abundant snags but are highly succeptable to saltation and, habitat degradation.

Size: Can reach a maximum of 60cm, but in NSW fish of 35cm and under are most common.

Characteristics: Colour ranges from a dark grey all over to a lighter brown with darker bands, blotches or mottling on sides. They are small to moderate in size with a long, slender body, large snout and have a top jaw that is longer than the bottom.

Confusing species: Two-spined blackfish, juvenile Murray and trout cod.

Fishing rules: Fishing for River blackfish is prohibited in all waters in NSW.
