Freshwater Fish Stocking FMS

The Minister for Primary Industries has approved a new NSW Freshwater Fish Stocking Fishery Management Strategy.

The strategy sets out the policies for managing freshwater fish stocking activities in the State’s public waterways for conservation, recreational fishing and Indigenous fishing purposes.

The Strategy was developed over a lengthy period involving a comprehensive environmental impact assessment, public consultation (in November/December 2003) and approval by the Minister for Planning under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. The management actions outlined in the Strategy aim to address the areas of high potential risk identified through the environmental assessment process.

The Strategy supports the stocking of fish to maintain and enhance our native and salmonid freshwater fisheries and fish populations in need of recovery, while at the same time seeking to minimise impacts on the natural environment.
