Recreational Fishing

What volunteers and the community are saying about the program

Leader volunteer: Bob Audsley talks to a group of students about rock fishing awareness at Cape Banks, prior to a whale watching trip.

Here's a sample of the responses from Fishcare Volunteers:

"Being a keen fisher, I saw the program as a way for me to put something back into fishing. I've found it to be very enjoyable, educating other fishers, making them aware there are rules we have to abide by, and generally meeting other fishers.

"Sustainable fish stocks through promoting catch and release, caring for our habitats and instilling good fishing ethics is the responsibility of all anglers. As a Fishcare Volunteer, I sincerely thank NSW DPI for the chance to perform a leadership role in this much valued pastime."

(The Fishcare Volunteer training program) was a fantastic weekend and a great learning experience and I met some wonderful people from up and down the coast. I want to extend my thanks and appreciation to the presenters of the course who were not only passionate about the volunteer program but were also great presenters who explained things in a clear and easy to understand manner.

I hope that the program will be successful in its aims to educate fishers state wide and I would recomend that anyone who cares about the environment and sustainable fisheries attend the course."

Letter from Mrs Theresa le Roux

I am a teacher at Cooranbong Public School, recently we had the privilege of having four Fishcare Volunteers visit our school and tell us about “fishing and safety”.

My year 2/3R class really enjoyed their presentation, we all wished we had more time to listen to them and ask more questions.

We are looking forward to them coming back to visit again to share their knowledge and experiences with us.

They had such a nice way of working with my class.

Letter from Jack Laos

I would like to express my thanks for your personal efforts in my acceptance at the recent NSW DPI Fishcare Volunteer Program course.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised on my first day by the DPI course structure and detail of presentation re current recreational fishing practices and licence fee issues.

More impressively, each of the DPI course presenters, such as David from TAFE, the local Fisheries Inspector and yourself (as Regional Coordinator) not only demonstrated knowledge of their respective subject material, but also conveyed conviction and passion by underlining the key issues with personal anecdotes.

Dee, the NSW DPI State Community Program Coordinator expertly explained relevant NSW DPI fishery policies, objectives, funding etc at a level understood by course participants.

Alstonville Fishing Club (AFC) wishes to also formally thank DPI’s Belinda Lucas for her continuing support of AFC via DPI newsletters, updates, circulars, pamphlets, fish measures, etc.

AFC remains committed to the protection of our local environment and to the support of NSW’s sustainable recreational fishing practices.
