Recreational fishing line recovery project
Saltwater Trust Allocation
2005-06 $20,633
Aim
Install specifically designed bins at key recreational fishing locations for disposal of recreational fishing line.
Background
This project is being developed to help reduce the risk of death and injury to wildlife that may be caused by discarded recreational monofilament fishing line. Recreational fishing is a popular activity and birds, fish, turtles and other marine life may become entangled in or ingest discarded recreational fishing line. This project is being undertaken by Oceanwatch Australia and involves the installation of specifically designed bins at key recreational fishing locations within coastal NSW. This will be combined with a targeted education campaign towards recreational fishers, local peak fishing bodies and clubs, local coastal councils, and bait and tackle shops. DPI Fishcare Volunteers will also be used in the campaign. The aim is to improve community awareness about appropriate disposal of fishing line by using the bins provided and in turn minimising the impact on wildlife. OceanWatch Australia has successfully trialled Australia’s first recreational fishing line recovery project in conjunction with Noosa Shire Council with great success.
