Recreational Fishing

Recreational fishing fee administration

Freshwater Trust Allocation

2007-08 $300,000

Saltwater Trusts Allocation

2007-08 $750,000

Aim

Provide convenient arrangements for recreational fishers to pay the fishing fee throughout NSW.

Background

When the general recreational fishing fee was introduced in March 2001 the government committed to implementing a transparent and cost effective administration scheme designed to maximise the benefits to recreational fishers. The cost of administering the fishing fee has been kept below 10 percent of the total revenue collected which means more money goes back into improving recreational fishing in NSW.

Administration of the fee system includes maintaining a statewide network of fishing fee agents and a web and telephone based fee payment system for fishers; efficient servicing of agents (including provision of fisher advisory material); responding to enquiries from recreational fishers; issuing replacement receipts; financial and data management and meeting auditor requirements for a transparent and accountable system.

NSW DPI is currently investigating options for improving the recreational fee system to make it easier for agents and anglers, including the introduction of a plastic fee receipt.
