Recreational Fishing

Inland Conservation Managers

Recreational Fishing (Freshwater) Trust

2006-07 $305,000

Aim

Funding for two inland conservation management staff

Background

Conservation managers are involved in reviewing development and works proposals that might impact on aquatic habitats and ensuring aquatic habitat protection requirements are included in natural resource management processes, such as land and water use, and estuary and floodplain planning. This provides for good water quality, healthy habitats and fisheries.

Grants have been provided to community groups for habitat rehabilitation projects in fresh and saltwater areas, including the removal of barriers to fish migration through managing flood gates, building fishways and removing weirs; replanting and protecting riparian and marine vegetation; and replacing snags in rivers. Recreational Trust funding often helps to attract additional funds from other sources, such as Catchment Management Authorities and councils.
