Recreational Fishing

Age, growth and reproductive biology of striped marlin in eastern Australia

Port Stephens Inerclub

Saltwater Trust Allocation

2008/09 $4,550

Aim

To gather scientific data on age, growth and reproductive biology of striped marlin.

Background

Rational judgements on the sustainability of east coast Australian striped marlin stocks are limited by the lack of biological data for striped marlin. This information hinders the understanding of the species vulnerability to over exploitation and the assessment of stock status, with flow on effects for the ability of fisheries managers to manage the resource.

This study is assessing the key population parameters including age, growth and reproductive biology. This biological information on striped marlin will support the development of stock assessments on this important species, which will contribute to the management of the species along the east coast of Australia.
