Greater Sydney Recreational Fishing Survey
Saltwater Trust Allocation
2008/09 $350,000
Aim
To collect site specific, baseline data on recreational fishing effort and catch (including size structure) within the Hawkesbury Shelf Bioregion
Background
A three year research program is being undertaken by NSW DPI scientists involving an extensive survey of recreational fishing in the Hawkesbury Shelf Bioregion. The survey will cover a large area, including 22 estuaries – about 520 km2; about 400 km of coastline; and about 6,300 km2.
Accurate and precise information that quantifies the distribution of recreational fishing effort and the catch (total number and tonnage kept and number released) of recreational fishers provides important baseline data for monitoring recreational fishing and the impacts on the natural fisheries resource.
This project aims to gather catch and effort information through a detailed on-site boat ramp and shore-based creel survey. This type of information is important for consideration of current and new management arrangements and will help shape any future management strategies of our coastal resources, to maintain and enhance the quality of recreational fishing.
