Macroalgae are members of the huge group of primitive aquatic plants know as algae. The algae include single celled ‘phytoplankton’and the multi-celled macroalgae, or seaweeds. Macroalgae should not be confused with seagrass.

This Primefact describes what macroalgae are, where they are found and their significance. It outlines the common species found in New South Wales. The loss of macroalgae and what can be done to protect these plants is also explored.
