Marine life

Marine life includes many dolphin, turtle, fish, invertebrate, seabird and seaweed species. Observe migrating humpback, southern right, pilot and killer whales from September to November.

The park has large fur seal populations.

  • The New Zealand fur seal is found in Australia and New Zealand, with reports of non-breeding animals along the southern NSW coast, particularly visiting Montague Island.  They were once hunted and fell to low population levels, but are now protected.
  • The island is also home to a large Australian Fur Seal population.
  • Fur seals like to stay close to land and are found on rocky shorelines.

Seabirds and shorebirds, including little terns, hooded plovers, sooty and pied oyster catchers and albatross have been recorded nesting or foraging in the park.
