During July 2017, SMART drumlines were deployed for 24 and 30 days at Ballina-Lennox Head; Evans Head, respectively (Table 1). The average number of hours that SMART drumlines were deployed at each location varied daily (5:37h to 10:40h) depending on ocean conditions; was longer at Evans Head (8:55 - 7:15 to 10:12) than Ballina-Lennox Head (8:15 - 5:37 to 10:40).

Total catches

A total of 27 target sharks were caught during July; 11 White Sharks at Ballina-Lennox Head and 16 White Sharks at Evans Head (11 males, 15 females; 1 unknown) (Table 1).

Four non-target animals were caught; two Greynurse Sharks (1 female; 1 unknown sex), one female Dusky Whaler Shark; and one female Black Ray (Table 1).

All animals were released alive.

On 12 occasions alerts had no catch with the bait fully intact on nine hooks when the contractor arrived.
