Eastern Freshwater Cod - Maccullochella ikei

Distribution

Eastern Freshwater Cod is only found in the Clarence and Richmond River catchments of northern NSW.

Size

Mainly less than 5kg and 660mm.

Characteristics

Eastern Freshwater Cod is a large, elongated, deep-bodied fish with relatively small eyes and a short, rounded, depressed snout with a distinctly concave profile; the lower jaw protrudes. It has a large mouth that extends below the back of the eye. They are generally a yellow green to golden colour, with a speckled pattern of black to very dark green spots.

Species similar in appearance

Murray Cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii) and Mary River Cod (Maccullochella peelii mariensis).
