The myths associated with pines
Primefact Number: 692 Edition: First edition Released/reviewed: 01 May 2008
Have you ever thought pine plantations were detrimental to soil health and increased acidity?
Forests NSW scientists have undertaken extensive research in this area and have found that pine trees actually contribute less to soil acidity than eucalypts.
Land that has previously been occupied with mature pine trees, can be returned to highly productive pasture, as was the case at Mannus Correctional Centre.
This Primefact dispels the myths associated with pine plantations and provides some valuable insight into:
- pasture improvement
- nutrient availability
- fauna adaptation to pine plantations
