Introduction

Camping and picnicking alongside crystal clear forest rivers and streams and plenty of space for tents makes the forests of the north coast popular with families and groups.

On the mid north coast, native State forests can be found around Kempsey, Wauchope, Taree and Port Macquarie. Some of the best camping areas in New South Wales can be found amongst the grassy glades and beside gentle mountain stream on the mid north coast.

Unique to the mid north coast is the popular tourist attraction "Timbertown". This heritage park just 2km west of Wauchope gives visitors the chance to sample life as it was lived more than a century ago. You can see a working bullock team and a blacksmith at work, play a game of skittles or learn how to split timber shingles.

Further north, there are many State forests to explore, particularly around the popular tourist destination of Coffs Harbour, Urunga, Dorrigo and further north around Grafton and Casino.
