Mine subsidence

Minerals Primefact
Primefact Number: 21    Edition: First edition    Released/reviewed: 01 Feb 2006

One cause of surface subsidence is underground coal mining, and the NSW Government has a number of policies and regulations in place to manage its impacts on the environment. The subsidence management process aims to improve assessment, management and regulation of subsidence effects on all mining operations. Approvals will only be granted after consideration of all potential impacts on landholders and the environment. This Primefact provides a brief overview of mine subsidence, its causes, potential impacts, and regulatory controls.
