Geoscience Information services

Geoscience Information manages and disseminates Mineral Resources information to the exploration industry, other government departments and the public.
The four key operational areas are:
- Geospatial Information (maps, graphics, GIS data management, multi media output, spatial and visualisation support)
- Geoscience Knowledge Management (DIGS/EROL and MinView on-line services, web management, records and heritage archiving, core libraries, educational activities)
- Geoscience Databases (COGENT II)
- New Frontiers Initiative promotion (events promotion and involvement, On the Outcrop e-newsletter to industry, participation in international events)
Geospatial Information
The Geospatial Information team provides spatial and visualisation services to the geoscientific mapping, information delivery and promotional programs.
The team produces core GIS and cartographic map products and maintains a spatial geological database. It provides graphics and multimedia output for maps, publications, posters and promotional materials. The capture and quality control of GIS data; map and CD ROM production; and printing, all fall under this umbrella.
Geoscience Knowledge Management
The Geoscience Knowledge Management team disseminates scientific and exploration data through its on-line applications, DIGS® and MinView. It coordinates the on-line submission of exploration and environmental reports from industry via the EROL system, and is responsible for the Geological Survey’s webpages. Hard copy material is scanned and all non-confidential data is made available to the community via the DIGS® browser application. The team archives reports, maps, plans and heritage items mainly with State Records.
The drill core storage facilities at the W B Clarke Geoscience Centre, Londonderry and the E C Andrews Drill Core Facility, Broken Hill are managed by this team.
The team disseminates information about the Department’s services, products, project progress and contacts through its e-newsletter, On the Outcrop and the Geological Survey’s webpages and it co-ordinates educational events for the public and training workshops for industry.
Geoscience Databases
The Geoscience Information sub-unit manages the COGENT II Geoscience Data Management Project which centralises and standardises all the Department’s geoscientific data collections.
The project’s vision is to provide on-demand access to all validated and non-confidential corporate geological data stored by the Department, from a single, integrated spatially-based information warehouse.
The project recognises that a major role of the Department is to provide geoscientific information to attract investment for mineral and petroleum exploration and development, and to help inform land use decision making.
Initiative Promotion
The Geoscience Information Sub-Unit promotes the New Frontiers initiative through coordination of marketing activities. These include:
- Promotion of NSW-specific exploration investment through events such as Mines & Wines 2010, the Broken Hill Exploration Initiative Conference, the NSW Mineral Exploration and Investment Conference, and Exploration in the House
- Annual involvement at major national and international petroleum and mineral conferences and trade shows such as AAPG, APPEA, PDAC, JOGMEC, IMME (India) and China Mining
- Participation in international Departmental and Ministerial delegations where appropriate
