National Geochemical Survey of Australia
The National Geochemical Survey of Australia (NGSA) is a project being undertaken by Geoscience Australia (GA) in cooperation with the Australian state and territory geological surveys. It is part of the Australian Government's Onshore Energy Security Initiative. The project aims to collect transported regolith samples which are representative of individual catchment areas, collectively covering most of the Australian continent. In New South Wales, 147 samples have been collected as at the end of June 2008 and are being analysed at Geoscience Australia.
The resulting geochemical database will allow calibration and ground-truthing of airborne radiometric data; will fill gaps in the current airborne radiometric and geochemical coverages; will allow multi-element characterisation and ranking of radiometric anomalies; will aid in first-order investigation of the nature of geothermal hot spots; and will have application for mineral exploration as well as environmental assessment and management.
